Using AviNat on a new phone
Because AviNat chats are end-to-end encrypted, a new phone has to be added to each chat before it can read new messages there. This usually happens by itself in the background. Earlier messages can't be shown on it unless you restore a chat backup: AviNat deletes messages from its servers once your other phones have them, so the backup is the only way to bring old chats to a new phone.
Try this
- Sign in on the new phone. Install AviNat, enter your phone number and the code we send you. See the sign-in code article if the code doesn't arrive.
- Restore your backup if you have one. If you see Restore chat history, tap Restore to bring back earlier messages.
- Approve the new phone if asked. If the new phone says Approve this device, open AviNat on your other phone that is still signed in and approve it there. If you can't, the screen tells you roughly how long until the new phone joins by itself.
- Keep your old phone online for a while. If you still have it, open AviNat on it while connected to the internet. A device already in a chat adds the new one automatically.
- Wait for "Joining this chat". A chat may show Joining this chat or "Connecting this device to the chat…". Keep AviNat open with a good connection. This can take a few minutes. The chat will be added as soon as a device already in it is online, for example the other person's phone.
- If it says "Waiting for [name]", ask that person to open AviNat, then tap Check again.
- If the screen says "No one can add this device", none of the devices in that chat are signed in anymore. You can tap Restart chat to start the chat again with everyone's current devices. Earlier messages still can't be shown on new devices.
Still not working?
Reply in your report thread (You > Help > My reports) and tell us which chat is affected (the person's name is enough), what the chat screen says, and when you signed in on the new phone. A person from our team will follow up. You can also write to [email protected].
Good to know
- You may see "This device joined the chat. Earlier messages can't be shown on this device." This is normal: old messages stay on the devices that already had them.
- For your safety, after a device is removed or signed out on your account, new devices may have to wait before they can join your chats, and restarting a chat may be paused for 3 days. The screen tells you when.
- See and manage where you're signed in under You > Devices. Logging out a device there removes its access to your chats.
- Don't uninstall AviNat or clear its data to fix a chat. Your messages are kept on the phone, and removing them can make them impossible to open there.
